Wards/ICU Veterinary Technician

Being a Veterinary Technologist/Technician isn’t your job; it’s your career. Working in General Wards allows you the opportunity to care for patients from multiple departments with a diverse set of conditions. If you’re new to emergency or specialty medicine, it’s a great place to start your career journey with CWVS.

In our ICU, you will be responsible for providing advanced nursing care to patients along a spectrum of case acuity. You can look forward to seeing the type of fascinating cases you’ve only read about. While working closely with our Board Certified Criticalists, your critical thinking skills will be essential to your success in this role. In addition to excellent nursing skills, a keen desire to learn, a deep respect for the human-animal bond, and communicating with clients with empathy and understanding are just a few of the attributes we look for in the people who join our team.

$28.00 – $36.00 per hour

Our technicians typically work 4 days a week, 10.5-hour days, but may be scheduled to work 5 days a week, 8.5-hour shifts in accordance with hospital need.

The typical start times for shifts are:

  • Days: 6:00 am – 4:30 pm
  • Swing: 12:00 pm – 10:30 pm
  • Evenings: 3:00 pm – 1:30 am
  • Overnights: 9:00 pm – 7:30 am

(these are general guidelines only – shift start and end times vary)

  • Must develop a thorough understanding of all common drugs/medications used, procedures and protocols within the Wards and ICU, as well as the ability to use all equipment safely and effectively
  • Directly monitor, carry out treatments and procedures, ensure patient comfort and document care for patients so that accurate medical records are maintained, and accurate invoicing can be done 
  • In addition to written records, ensures that pertinent information and observations relating to patient care is provided to the next shift during oral rounds.
  • Carry out communication with, primary Doctor, Hospitalist regarding patient status updates, and alert of any changes or concerns. Also participating in communication with Clients.
  • Calculates, dispenses, and administers medications at the direction of the Specialist on the case.
  • Perform technical nursing skills such as: IV catheter placement, blood collection, urine collection (cystocentesis, catheterization), taking radiographs, etc.
  • Ensures supply inventory is sufficient to meet the demands of work area, and that that the work area is kept clean and organized.
  • Ensures that all equipment is properly maintained documented, and any concerns are reported.
  • Responsible for coordinating breaks and delegating appropriate tasks to Patient Care Assistants on shift.
  • Facilitate a positive work environment.
  • Actively participate in and successfully complete company provided sedation training program, and all in house CE, as offered and/or scheduled.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Has a strong knowledge and understanding of normal vital parameters, and the ability to recognize changes and or abnormalities.

ERCC Patient Care Assistant – Overnights

This position is primarily responsible for providing support to the Doctors and Technicians of the ICU and the Emergency and Critical Care Service.  The Emergency Service is fast-paced, detail orientated and deals with critical situations.  An ideal Emergency PCA candidate will have a calm and level-headed demeanor and have strong problem-solving skills in stressful situations.

$21.00-$26.00 per hour plus hourly shift premium for working the overnight shift.

  • Wednesday-Saturday rotation
  • 21:30 – 08:00
  • One bi-weekly shift in ICU
  • As a member of the overall CWVS team, you may be required to assist in other areas of the hospital if your service is not in need of you or if the Service Doctor is away. This could involve working any shift within the twenty-four hour operating day of the hospital, including weekends and holidays

 

  • Assists with the admission and discharge of patients, creating consent forms and estimates, taking deposits/final payments
  • Documents and maintains proper medical record keeping
  • Triage Emergency Line phone calls and answer telephone inquiries
  • Assists doctors and technicians with patient triage on presentation, examinations, diagnostics, treatments, and procedures
  • Ensures all client documentation is complete and updated (Forms and Logs)
  • Updates and tracks submitted lab samples and advises the doctor when results are received
  • Keeps emergency area clean, stocked and prepared for emergencies (following shift checklist)
  • Ensures all equipment in the Emergency area is properly maintained
  • Handling euthanasia related tasks (consent, billing, aftercare, post-euthanasia paperwork)
  • Greet and offer assistance to clients
  • Communicates with clients as directed by the ERCC Doctor or Technician and documents all communication in patient files

  • This position includes both Day shifts and Evening shifts.  The rotation will be 4×10’s with the occasional 5×8’s according to hospital need.
  • The breakdown of the required shifts are as follows:Day Shifts: 
    • 07:00 – 17:30
    • 08:00 – 18:30

    Swing Shifts:

    • 12:00 – 22:30

    Evening Shifts:

    • 15:00 – 01:30

Oncology Veterinary Technician

This position is responsible primarily for care of Oncology patients including preparing patient for procedures, following treatment plans, administering drugs, monitoring vital signs and over-all patient assessment. Communication with clients and referring veterinarians is an integral part of the role. Both client communications and hands-on patient care are conducted under the direct supervision of the Oncologist.

$28.00 – $36.00 per hour

  • 4, 10-hour shifts between Monday to Friday
  • As a member of the overall CWVS team, you may be required to assist in other areas of the hospital when your service is not in need of you or if the doctor on the service is away. This could involve working any shift within the 24-hour operating day of the hospital including weekends and holidays.
  • Must develop a thorough understanding of all procedures and protocols within the Oncology service as well as the ability to use all equipment safely and effectively. 
  • Perform technical nursing skills such as: IV catheter placement, blood collection, urine collection (cystocentesis, catheterization), taking radiographs, etc.
  • Perform sedation for procedures such as CT, oral exams, ultrasounds, and radiographs. *Sedation training will be provided if not already trained.
  • Calculates, dispenses and administers medications at the direction of the Oncologist on the case.
  • Ensures that procedures, medications etc. are accurately documented on Smartflow sheets in advance of daily invoicing.
  • Communicates efficiently and effectively with clients, referring veterinarians, CWVS doctors and staff, and ensures that all communications are accurately logged in Ezyvet.
  • Ensures detailed patient histories are obtained from clients and communicates this to the Oncologist.
  • Responsible for accurately documenting all patient information while on shift and for ensuring that this information is transmitted in a timely and efficient manner to staff in Wards, ICU, and to other Oncology staff who may be involved in individual cases.
  • Ensures supply inventory is sufficient to meet the needs of the Oncology service.
  • Ensures that all equipment is properly maintained, and that maintenance is documented.
  • Ensures Standard Operating Procedures are current and comprehensive.
  • Keeps the Oncology workstation and procedures areas clean and organized.
  • Ensures that Oncology Assistant is accomplishing their duties and that the Technician Supervisor or Human Resources is aware of any performance issues.

Veterinary Technician Trainer

Delivers educational activities to staff by teaching, facilitating groups, mentoring, and conducting formal presentations, demonstrations, and lectures. In collaboration with members of the interprofessional team, develops, implements, and revises orientation and professional development programs for staff based on pre-identified learning needs, health outcomes, regional priorities, current theory/research, and education program effectiveness to ensure that the assigned professional practice initiative’s objectives are met. Role models professional practice to staff and students based on the application of theories, concepts, and principles to promote quality practice environments.

$32.00 – $40.00 per hour

  • 4, 10-hour shifts per week
  • As we are a 24/7 facility, flexibility in adjustment of work hours may be required to accommodate training needs including the occasional evening or weekend.
  • Develop and implement orientation and professional development programs for staff (technicians and assistants) by methods such as completing learning needs assessments of an individual trainee and/or clinical area and determining educational requirements. Revises education programs based on pre-identified learning needs, patient/client outcomes, standards of practice, and introduction of new skills/procedures. Evaluates the effectiveness of programs to ensure educational program objectives are met and to determine opportunities for quality improvement
  • In collaboration with the interprofessional team, deliver educational activities to staff by methods such as teaching, facilitating groups, mentoring, and conducting formal presentations, demonstrations, and lectures. Arranges sessions in collaboration with staff to determine time, frequency, and duration to ensure effective use of resources. Maintains records and schedules staff into sessions as appropriate
  • Role models best practice, clinical concepts, and skills to staff/student. Provides information based on application of theories, concepts, and principles reflective of Professional Practice approaches and educator competencies. Supports excellence in patient care

Surgery Patient Care Assistant

The primary responsibilities of this position are to assist the Specialists and Technicians within the  Surgery service. Duties will include prepping patients for surgery, scrubbing into surgery, taking  radiographs, understanding surgical protocols, performing proper instrument cleaning, wrapping  and disinfection of surgical instruments, running the autoclaves and to ensure the proper cleaning  and disinfection of the surgical areas. The Surgery service is fast-paced, detail orientated and deals  with critical situations by nature. An ideal Surgery Assistant candidate will have a calm and  levelheaded demeanor and ability to problem solve in stressful situations. 

$21.00 – $26.00 per hour

  • Rotational shifts comprising of 4*10’s
  • Rotational On-Call Shifts on Saturdays
  • All rotations are to be evenly shared amongst the surgical assistant team.
  • Perform pre-surgical preparation of patients, instruments and equipment. Preparation of patients and ORs for surgery using sterile techniques (scrubbing, opening  instruments etc.)  
  • Scrubbing to assist in draping patients as well as assisting the surgeon in a multitude of different  surgical procedures. 
  • Obtain a good understanding of surgical procedures and ability to anticipate the needs of the  surgeon. 
  • Ensures cleaning and sterilization equipment is properly maintained and documented. Responsible for keeping instruments and operating theatre areas clean and organized. Assists with and/or performs radiographs on surgical patients. 
  • Ability to remember the required instruments for individual packs, instrument location, and the  specific needs of individual surgeons. 
  • Ability to focus on complex tasks while working in stressful environments. Assists in patient restraint so that procedures can be performed effectively by the surgeon or  technician.
