Wards/ICU Veterinary Technician

Being a Veterinary Technologist/Technician isn’t your job; it’s your career. Working in General Wards allows you the opportunity to care for patients from multiple departments with a diverse set of conditions. If you’re new to emergency or specialty medicine, it’s a great place to start your career journey with CWVS.

In our ICU, you will be responsible for providing advanced nursing care to patients along a spectrum of case acuity. You can look forward to seeing the type of fascinating cases you’ve only read about. While working closely with our Board Certified Criticalists, your critical thinking skills will be essential to your success in this role. In addition to excellent nursing skills, a keen desire to learn, a deep respect for the human-animal bond, and communicating with clients with empathy and understanding are just a few of the attributes we look for in the people who join our team.

$28.00 – $36.00 per hour

Our technicians typically work 4 days a week, 10.5-hour days, but may be scheduled to work 5 days a week, 8.5-hour shifts in accordance with hospital need.

The typical start times for shifts are:

  • Days: 6:00 am – 4:30 pm
  • Swing: 12:00 pm – 10:30 pm
  • Evenings: 3:00 pm – 1:30 am
  • Overnights: 9:00 pm – 7:30 am

(these are general guidelines only – shift start and end times vary)

  • Must develop a thorough understanding of all common drugs/medications used, procedures and protocols within the Wards and ICU, as well as the ability to use all equipment safely and effectively
  • Directly monitor, carry out treatments and procedures, ensure patient comfort and document care for patients so that accurate medical records are maintained, and accurate invoicing can be done 
  • In addition to written records, ensures that pertinent information and observations relating to patient care is provided to the next shift during oral rounds.
  • Carry out communication with, primary Doctor, Hospitalist regarding patient status updates, and alert of any changes or concerns. Also participating in communication with Clients.
  • Calculates, dispenses, and administers medications at the direction of the Specialist on the case.
  • Perform technical nursing skills such as: IV catheter placement, blood collection, urine collection (cystocentesis, catheterization), taking radiographs, etc.
  • Ensures supply inventory is sufficient to meet the demands of work area, and that that the work area is kept clean and organized.
  • Ensures that all equipment is properly maintained documented, and any concerns are reported.
  • Responsible for coordinating breaks and delegating appropriate tasks to Patient Care Assistants on shift.
  • Facilitate a positive work environment.
  • Actively participate in and successfully complete company provided sedation training program, and all in house CE, as offered and/or scheduled.

ERCC Patient Care Assistant – Overnights

This position is primarily responsible for providing support to the Doctors and Technicians of the ICU and the Emergency and Critical Care Service.  The Emergency Service is fast-paced, detail orientated and deals with critical situations.  An ideal Emergency PCA candidate will have a calm and level-headed demeanor and have strong problem-solving skills in stressful situations.

$21.00-$26.00 per hour plus hourly shift premium for working the overnight shift.

  • Wednesday-Saturday rotation
  • 21:30 – 08:00
  • One bi-weekly shift in ICU
  • As a member of the overall CWVS team, you may be required to assist in other areas of the hospital if your service is not in need of you or if the Service Doctor is away. This could involve working any shift within the twenty-four hour operating day of the hospital, including weekends and holidays

 

  • Assists with the admission and discharge of patients, creating consent forms and estimates, taking deposits/final payments
  • Documents and maintains proper medical record keeping
  • Triage Emergency Line phone calls and answer telephone inquiries
  • Assists doctors and technicians with patient triage on presentation, examinations, diagnostics, treatments, and procedures
  • Ensures all client documentation is complete and updated (Forms and Logs)
  • Updates and tracks submitted lab samples and advises the doctor when results are received
  • Keeps emergency area clean, stocked and prepared for emergencies (following shift checklist)

Cardiology Veterinary Technician

Our goal is to build a service that delivers high-level, progressive cardiology care. We are seeking a candidate who is equally passionate about veterinary medicine, committed to continuous learning and professional growth, and takes pride in providing patient-focused, client-centered care. Training will be provided; however, the ideal candidate should be motivated to develop new and advanced skills.

$28.00 – $36.00 per hour

  • This position is based on working 10-hour shifts, 4 days per week between Monday and Friday
  • Travel for initial training may be required.
  • Develops a strong understanding of Cardiology procedures, protocols, medications, and equipment, ensuring safe and effective use
  • Communicates clearly and efficiently with clients, referring veterinarians, and internal teams
  • Obtains and relays detailed patient histories to the cardiologist
  • Maintains accurate, timely patient records, treatments, and procedures in Ezyvet and SmartFlow

Wards/ICU Patient Care Assistant

Our primary goal is to provide optimal medical, surgical, and rehabilitation support and care to our patients, fostering the bonds between owners and their pets and between ourselves and our referring clinicians.

Patient Care Assistants provide support to the Technicians and Veterinarians and basic care for patients.

$21.00-$26.00 per hour

The typical 10-hour shifts are:

  • Days: 7am-5:30pm
  • Evenings: 3pm -1:30am
  • Overnights: 10:30pm – 9am. 
  • We offer shift premiums for both Weekday and Weekend Evenings and Overnight shifts.

An ideal candidate would be available to work rotational shifts including weekends, nights, & overnights, have a can-do attitude and passion for animal care.

  • Responsible for basic animal husbandry for patients in Wards and ICU – water, food, walks, grooming, bathing etc.
  • Ensures that all kennels are cleaned, disinfected and properly maintained with clean bedding for patients
  • Assists in the restraint of patients so that veterinarians and technicians can perform procedures and treatments effectively and efficiently, including but not limited to blood collection, administration of medication, chemotherapy treatments and radiographic studies. May be asked to administer treatments under the supervision of the doctor or technician on duty
  • Will learn, understand and apply protocols applicable to handling with potentially infectious and/or zoonotic diseases
  • May be asked to assist in patient monitoring under the supervision of a veterinarian or technician.
  • Facilitates admissions included data entry of client/patient information and receipt of deposits. Upon discharge of patients, may be required to take final payment. Answers phones in wards and ICU when needed
  • Greet and offer assistance to clients

Radiology Patient Care Assistant

The Radiology Patient Care Assistant works closely with the Veterinary Radiologists and the Radiology Technicians providing diagnostic imaging services to inpatients and outpatients.  The position entails handling of patients for imaging (such as ultrasound), and communicating with clients, veterinarians and veterinary staff. The radiology assistant directly assists with ultrasonography, radiography, fluoroscopy, CT, and MRI

$21.00-$26.00 per hour

  • 4, 10-hour shifts between Monday – Friday
  • As a member of the overall CWVS team, you may be required to assist in other areas of the hospital when your service is not in need of you or if the doctor on the service is away.  This could involve working any shift within the twenty-four-hour operating day of the hospital, including weekends and holidays
  • Assists the service in its overall communication with other areas of the hospital
  • Communicates efficiently and effectively with clients, referring veterinarians, CWVS doctors and staff
  • Ensures supply inventory is sufficient to meet the needs of the service

Oncology Veterinary Technician

This position is responsible primarily for care of Oncology patients including preparing patient for procedures, following treatment plans, administering drugs, monitoring vital signs and over-all patient assessment. Communication with clients and referring veterinarians is an integral part of the role. Both client communications and hands-on patient care are conducted under the direct supervision of the Oncologist.

$28.00 – $36.00 per hour

  • 4, 10-hour shifts between Monday to Friday
  • As a member of the overall CWVS team, you may be required to assist in other areas of the hospital when your service is not in need of you or if the doctor on the service is away. This could involve working any shift within the 24-hour operating day of the hospital including weekends and holidays.
  • Must develop a thorough understanding of all procedures and protocols within the Oncology service as well as the ability to use all equipment safely and effectively. 
  • Perform technical nursing skills such as: IV catheter placement, blood collection, urine collection (cystocentesis, catheterization), taking radiographs, etc.
  • Perform sedation for procedures such as CT, oral exams, ultrasounds, and radiographs. *Sedation training will be provided if not already trained.
  • Calculates, dispenses and administers medications at the direction of the Oncologist on the case.
  • Ensures that procedures, medications etc. are accurately documented on Smartflow sheets in advance of daily invoicing.
  • Communicates efficiently and effectively with clients, referring veterinarians, CWVS doctors and staff, and ensures that all communications are accurately logged in Ezyvet.
  • Ensures detailed patient histories are obtained from clients and communicates this to the Oncologist.
  • Responsible for accurately documenting all patient information while on shift and for ensuring that this information is transmitted in a timely and efficient manner to staff in Wards, ICU, and to other Oncology staff who may be involved in individual cases.

Veterinary Technician Trainer

Delivers educational activities to staff by teaching, facilitating groups, mentoring, and conducting formal presentations, demonstrations, and lectures. In collaboration with members of the interprofessional team, develops, implements, and revises orientation and professional development programs for staff based on pre-identified learning needs, health outcomes, regional priorities, current theory/research, and education program effectiveness to ensure that the assigned professional practice initiative’s objectives are met. Role models professional practice to staff and students based on the application of theories, concepts, and principles to promote quality practice environments.

$32.00 – $40.00 per hour

  • 4, 10-hour shifts per week
  • As we are a 24/7 facility, flexibility in adjustment of work hours may be required to accommodate training needs including the occasional evening or weekend.
  • Develop and implement orientation and professional development programs for staff (technicians and assistants) by methods such as completing learning needs assessments of an individual trainee and/or clinical area and determining educational requirements. Revises education programs based on pre-identified learning needs, patient/client outcomes, standards of practice, and introduction of new skills/procedures. Evaluates the effectiveness of programs to ensure educational program objectives are met and to determine opportunities for quality improvement
